Locked out of your home? First, the quick checks
Before you call anyone, take two minutes:
- Every door. Back door, side door, the door through the garage.
- Anyone with a key. A partner, roommate, family member or neighbor who is close by.
- Your landlord or building manager if you rent. Some can let you in quickly during the day.
- A door code or lock app if your home has one. Codes get forgotten more often than keys.
Still locked out? Call 763-600-3529. Our guide on the first 10 minutes of a house lockout has the full checklist.
What we do at your door
We confirm you live there, then open the lock. Most standard residential locks, the Kwikset and Schlage knobs and deadbolts on most Twin Cities homes, can be opened without damage. Older houses in Minneapolis and St. Paul sometimes have mortise locks, the tall locks set into the edge of the door, and we open those too.
If the lock is broken or very high security, opening it may take more work. We tell you before we start, and if the price changes, you decide.
Lost keys: open it and secure it in one visit
A lockout because the keys are lost is really two jobs: getting in, and making sure the lost key cannot be used by someone else. While we are there we can:
- Replace the deadbolt so the lost key no longer fits, with new keys for you
Why we ask for ID
We never open a door for someone who does not live there. That check protects you as much as anyone. If your ID is inside, that is fine: we confirm it as soon as the door is open, before we leave.
Where we work
We are a mobile locksmith based in Crystal, so we come to homes across Minneapolis, St. Paul and nearby suburbs including Robbinsdale, New Hope, Golden Valley and Brooklyn Park.
How a house lockout call works
Call or text
Give us the address and the type of lock if you know it. We give you a price and a time.
Wait somewhere safe
A neighbor's porch, your car or a nearby store. We call when we are close.
We confirm you live there
ID, lease or a bill with the address. If it is all inside, we check right after the door opens.
Back inside
We open the lock.
House lockout questions
How do you open a locked front door?
Usually by picking the lock or bypassing the latch with professional tools, which leaves the lock working. Drilling is a last resort, for high-security or broken locks, and we explain why before we do it.
Can you get me into my apartment?
Yes, if you can show you live there. Many buildings have a manager or maintenance line that can let you in too, so check that first if it is business hours.
Do you open garage doors and side doors?
Yes. Service doors, garage entry doors, storm doors and patio door locks. Overhead garage door openers are a different trade, but a locked service door into the garage is ours.
Is breaking a window cheaper than a locksmith?
Almost never. A replacement window plus the labor usually costs more than a lockout call, and the house is open until it is fixed. In a Minnesota winter, that is a cold night.
